Ukrainalaistaiteilija Maryna Semenkova esittää performanssitaidetta Villa Väinölässä perjantaina 9.12.2022 klo 17 alkaen. ”Zero Line” on jatkoa hänen Munchenissa toteuttamalleen ”Red Utopia” projektille, jossa käsiteltiin Neuvostoliiton syntyhetkiä sata vuotta sitten ja sitä kuinka vaarallista on rakentaa valtio utopioiden pohjalle.

Maryna Semenkova on sodan alettua elänyt taiteilijaresidensseissä eri puolilla Eurooppaa ja Alajärvi on hänen neljäs kohteensa. Ranskassa Maryna ystävystyi Alinaan, ukrainalaisäitiin jonka poika oli lähtenyt vapaaehtoisena rintamalle. Elokuussa Marynan jo jatkaessa Saksaan, Alina lähetti viestin: ”Minulla ei ole enää poikaa”. Alinan poika oli taistellut sodan eturintamassa, niin lähellä että olivat voineet kuulla vihollisen juttelua. Tämä oli sotilaille nollalinja, zero line.

Suomi ja Ukraina ovat etulinjan maita. Sadan vuoden takainen Suomi onnistui hyödyntämään hetken auki olleen ikkunan itsenäisyyteen, kun taas Ukraina joutui odottamaan aina vuoden 1991 Neuvostoliiton romahdukseen asti. Suomen lippu kuvastaa sinisiä järviämme ja lumisia talviamme, Ukrainan lippu viljavia peltoja sinitaivaan alla. Molempien maiden lähihistoriassa myös punaiset liput ovat liehuneet, mutta punaisen utopian värit ovat tasaisen varmasti karisseet pois.

Maryna Semenkova pohtii ”Zero Line” -performanssiesityksessään Suomen ja Ukrainan lähihistorian yhteisiä piirteitä Euroopan itäisellä laidalla hyödyntäen lippujen tematiikkaa sekä videotaidetta. Esitystä varten Maryna neuloo kuukauden päivät Suomen ja Ukrainan lippuja saattaen neulontatyön valmiiksi Suomen itsenäisyyspäivänä. Performanssi on vuorovaikutteinen ja yleisö voi osallistua siihen halutessaan. Esityksen jälkeen on aikaa keskusteluille.

Ukrainian artist Maryna Semenkova will keep performance artshow at Villa Väinölä on Friday 9.12.2022 starting at 5 p.m. ”Zero Line” is a continuation of the ”Red Utopia” project she made in Munich, which discussed the birth of Soviet Union a hundred years ago and how dangerous it is to build a state on the basis of utopias.

Since the start of the war, Maryna Semenkova has lived in artist residencies in different parts of Europe, and Alajärvi is her fourth place. In France, Maryna befriended Alina, a Ukrainian mother whose son had gone to the war as a volunteer. In August, when Maryna was already moving on to Germany, Alina sent a message: ”I don’t have a son anymore”. Alina’s son had fought at the front of the war, so close they could hear the enemy talking. This was called zero line by the soldiers.

Finland and Ukraine are frontline countries. Hundred years ago Finland managed to take advantage of the narrow window for independence, while Ukraine had to wait until 1991 and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Finland’s flag reflects our blue lakes and snowy winters, Ukraine’s flag represents fertile fields under a blue sky. In the recent history of both countries, red flags have also been seen, but the colors of the red utopia have faded away and surely gone.

In ”Zero Line” performance, Maryna Semenkova ponders the similarities of Finland´s and Ukraine´s history on the eastern edge of Europe, using the theme of flags and video art. For the performance, Maryna knits the flags of Finland and Ukraine, completing the knitting work on Finland’s Independence Day.  The Performance is interactive and audience can participate if they wish. After the presentation, there will be time for discussions.
