Introduction

Nelimarkka Museum / South Ostrobothnia Art Museum

Finnish painter and art professor Eero Nelimarkka founded the Nelimarkka Museum in Alajärvi in 1964. Today, the Nelimarkka Museum also serves as the regional art museum in South Ostrobothnia. In addition to exhibiting Eero Nelimarkka’s artworks, the museum mainly displays contemporary art by Finnish and foreign artists.

In addition to the art collection owned by the town of Alajärvi, the museum has several private collections, the most important of which is the Nelimarkka Fund collection.

Museum services include school and group tours, events and workshops.

Museum staff also oversee cultural services at Villa Väinölä. Villa Väinölä, located in the centre of Alajärvi, is a low-threshold exhibition and event space. The building has cultural events, art exhibitions and an architecture and space residency.
